I put my car in a shop for repairs. The man told me it would be ready in 4 days. I showed up one day late to pick it up and he had not even started on it. I had to pay 350.00 up front. 3 times the man told me it would be ready the next day and it wasn't. Monday I went by there and he told me he had a hard time getting a part but it would be ready later that day....that was 4 days ago, it wasn't. He's had my car going on 5 weeks. I have 2 other cars one only has 800 miles on it, it's new so it's not like I have to have it.
What would you do? Try being a woman and dealing with people like this, they take advantage of you.

What would you do? Try being a woman and dealing with people like this, they take advantage of you. I am a woman and I don't put up with stuff like that. and I won't be taken advantage of either. First off... I would NEVER give a mechanic money 'Up front' NEVER. If he is legit and runs a legit business he should have the money to cover parts, that should have been your first red flag. Since he promised to have your car fixed in 4 days and it's now been 5 weeks, call im and tell him you are coming by to retrieve the money you advanced him and HE will pay to have your car towed to a reliable mechanic.. Tell him you have contacted your attorney and the next time he hears from you will be through your attorney..Tell him you want interest on the money you 'gave' him up front, otherwise you will take him to small claims court Emphasize that he will be responsible for the towing cost. My husband was deployed many times over his 26 years in the Navy. I was left to deal with this sort of thing. I was a quick study with shady mechanics. Never let yourself be taken advantage of and NEVER pay anything up front. Also get an estimate that states " Not to exceed " unless he contacts you first. That way you won't be hit with hidden charges. Get everything in writing. Your next move.. file a formal complaint with the BBB, In the future, if you do have your car fixed and it includes new parts.. ask for the old part back. I'ts yours and you have the right to ask for it. If the mechanic refuses or says he no longer has that old part, go to another mechanic and have him check to see if the part had actually been replaced with a new one. That trick is old as the hills, AND they don't expect that from a woman. ' The little lady ' And another thing.. don't fall for that old " You have metal shavings in your transmission. You need a new transmission" If they tell you that, definitely get a second or third opinion, often times all you need is a transmission fluid change.. what a racket.

It's a little more complex than that. When I had it taken up there it wooldn't run, it's running now. He replaced the head gasket and plugs. In the process something was broken on the exhaust system that he claims he is having a hard time finding. I started to call him this evening but I couldn't believe anything he said anyway. This is a 2004 model I bought new and it looks new, I'm planning on selling it if I ever get it back.

I guess I'm just naturally leery of mechanics in general. A typical head gasket job generally runs between 600.00 and 1,500 and even higher depending on engine size and how difficult it is to access the head gasket.
Does he mean he can't diagnose the exhaust problem or he can't find the part ? If it's a part, find out exactly what part and go buy it yourself, some parts can only be bought at a dealership.

It's a part. He says they want (dealer) $900.00 for the part which I don't believe.
I will monday check around and see if one of the other shops can fix it.
No matter the outcome I will file a complaint with the BBB.

Is he saying it's the catalytic converter ? I can't think of anything else exhaust system related that would be that expensive.

No, it's a thing right below the exhaust manifold, or I should say hooks up to the manifold. It's maybe 12 inches long, I have no idea what it is all I know is they broke it and it's expensive.

If they 'broke it' then why should you have to pay for it ? If you know for sure that they broke it, I think I'd have to have a come to Jesus meeting.. no way I'd pay for it, if you can prove otherwise.

I know this, it wasn't like that when I took it there. It's still there. I hope he gets so tired of looking at it he'll fix it.

I went up there today to get after him and know why it's taking so long. He told me it's ready and has been...we drive it every day. It was blocked in but he said come by this evening and he would have it sitting out front. He told me to drive it a few days and see if I liked it......than come back and pay him the rest I owe him...UT OH.

A 2004 model car does not have a heat riser just below the manifold and it is not 12" long. If it is a gasoline powered foreign car it is probably a catalytic converter, they are tough and hard to break. If it is a diesel powered foreign car it might be a diesel particulate filter. Again another part hard to break. Most of the time exhaust bolts or studs with nuts will seize and break off. Not difficult for a competent mechanic to fix. IMHO from being a competent mechanic for the oldest Material handling equipment in the USA.

I got the car back and it runs great, altogether it cost me 350.00 far less then I thought it would be. He had the head reworked, a new head gasket, new plugs, new timing belt. Now to get rid of it before something else goes wrong.
