Same here but I got on the net and searched for add-ons that made it look like Windows7/Vista/XP and anyone would be hard pressed to actually see Win 8.1 on this laptop. Do a search for start menu 8 and install that.

Okay, I think you're gone but if you come back how do you shut 8.1 down?

I found out how to shut it down, it's differnt I'll say that. It's amazing what reading the instructing can do. I always do it backwards, I try to do it and can't then go hunting for the instructions...whew.

Glad you found it but if you go to the control panel and then click on Power Options, when that opens click on 'Choose what the Power Button does'. Once there you can click on 'When I press the Power Button' click on the down arrow and select 'Shut Down'. Now when you press the power button it will do a normal shutdown. Have it do a shutdown on battery and plugged in.

My Windows 8.1 has a thing that looks like a house window in the lower left corner, which, given a RIGHT click, displays several options like shut down, search, task manager.
I don't understand why yours (and others) would be different.

There's a kind of old fashioned start button in the lower left corner both for the new fangled "Start Page" and the desktop, just like always (by popular demand), except you have to right click. It wasn't there in Windows 8 -- it's just in the upgrade 8.1.
If they sold you Windows 8, go to Microsoft and get the free upgrade to 8.1.

what I have is the latest and that is 8.1. I don't like it as well as vista but in time I'll get use to it....I hope.
