One of my granddaughter's best friends is taking Religious Studies in school. She has chosen the topic of speaking in tongues for her term paper.
Having been a Southern Baptist in my youth and Methodist for the majority of my life, with a spattering of Presbyterian in the interim, I've never witnessed this phenomenon. I have watched videos on the subject on youtube, that's the extent of my knowledge.
Have any of you ever experienced this first hand ? If so, why do you think some people have the 'gift' of speaking in tongue and others not ?
Does it have anything to do with faith ? Are some people chosen to partake and others not ? Just from hearing the phonics involved, it seems as though every one is 'doing their own thing'. I hear no pattern nor similarities. So does that mean that God is channeling different words or sounds to the individual ?
Since, as I said, I have no personal knowledge on the subject, I was wondering if anyone could recount your experience, that is, if you've ever had one.
I would never question one's faith, nor their demonstration nor their method of delivery of that faith. Just because I've never had the experience does not mean I question their verbal contact with God.
I will admit though, it's quite a mystery to me.

Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit.

Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit. I 'received the Holy Spirit' eons ago. I never spoke in tongues. By 'receiving the Holy Spirit' I presume you mean that first experience or feeling in your heart when you chose to accept Christ and all his gifts of forgiveness and salvation. I've known many believers who are true to their faith and they've never spoken in tongues either So back to my original question. Why some and not others ?

I don't know why some and not others. I was at a church service one night and I was so deeply effected I spoke but it was not in English, I sang but not in English. I didn't try to do it. It never happened again. There are those that speak in tongues all the time, where in a service or at home while in prayer.

Speaking in tongues and interpretation of the same is quite real. Yet, it is also faked by well meaning individuals and faked by those who would utilize it for gain.
