To me it means the Earth is preparing for the long sleep of Winter, to come alive again in the spring. It also means beautiful colors in nature, wonderful smells of fallen leaves that rustle under my feet, and the joy of a cup of hot spiced cider.

Since I live in Florida we don't have 'fall' per se. We actually don't even have a 'winter' in the usual definition of the word. 'Fall' is just a collection of a few months leading up to 'winter' 'Winter' is a short respite between hot and hot.
We have had more than a few Christmas Days when the temps were in the high 70S or even low 80s and needed the AC.
If we have a rare freeze, we know the temps will be in the 70s in a day or two.
Do I miss cold weather? Absolutely NOT !

I love the Fall colors, but the shrinking daylight is always a downer. I'm more of a Spring person.
Even in Florida, the days are short in December, although not as short as they are here in Maryland. To get back to normal length days we have to go South of the Equator, which is a long way, expensive, and tiring. We are hoping to get to Guatemala with Caravan Tours in February or March, and maybe take a cruise or spend a few days in the Tampa area in December.

Have you ever been to Sanibel or Captiva Island on Fl's west coast ? It's really pretty there and the shelling is the best in the state. There are no traffic lights on Sanibel and all the buildings are low profile so as to not spoil the view of the ocean Anna Maria Island, just across the causeway from Bradenton, is nice too, not a lot of car traffic, more of a bicycle sort of island.. Most people gravitate to the more well known tourist towns and completely miss out on the unspoiled quieter areas.

Yes, we've been to Sanibel a couple of times. We also like Tarpon Springs, for its Greek restaurants. I am fond of Bern's Steak House, in Tampa, too.

It was originally founded by, or at least. originally known for the Greek sponge divers. It's a Greek food lover's paradise ( like me )

We've been out on the tour boats to see the sponge divers. We have had gargantuan meals in Tarpon Springs, that we couldn't finish, or carry home with us as carryouts, because they have so much food that is so good and we get there so seldom. The bakeries are also pleasing to the eye!
We are big fans of Greek food, and attend Greek food festivals sponsored by the local churches around here when we can. We carry two coolers with us and buy enough food to last us many days afterwards. We have attended the church festivals, at the same churches, for so long (since 1978 or so) that we have seen the people in the church serving the food get old and replaced by younger people, which will also happen to us, soon enough.
We have taken tours to Greece and Turkey twice. Turkey is also fun, and their food is also interesting. They are pretty friendly to Americans, compared to other Islamic nations. The last time we were there was in late October / early November of last year. Santorini is one of the most amazing places I have ever seen.
Our trips to Greece and Turkey have been cruises, because cruises are the cheapest way for us to visit those areas. Cruise food is a bit bland, so we eat ashore for lunch at local restaurants as much as possible. Costs more that way, but it is fun, and we get there so rarely it is worth it for the experience. Our first trip to that area, on a new defunct cruise line, included six days of land tours.
We may go to the Tampa area this year, since Sara has been sick and we had to cancel our Fall trip to the NC mountains, and we'd like to have some sort of pre-Winter getaway. If not, we may take a cruise out of Tampa, Ft Lauderdale, or Miami.

I think Greek is my favorite ethnic food You are right about the pastry shops in TS too, they are a sight to behold. I hope Sara is feeling better. The last time we went to the mountains in NC it was late October ,and for some strange reason that year, there was very little color in the foliage.. maybe it was just an anomaly. I was disappointed.
