The spokessperson for the POTUS is appointed by the President and has the duty and responsibility of interacting with the press aka the media on important issues.
They have a responsibility to pass along information to the public in general. Since the President is a very busy man this is why he has a press secretary.
Yesterday I saw a clip of an interaction between a reporter and Josh Earnest the current Press Secretary. I can't find it on you tube anywhere.. however the exchange went something like this :
The reporter was asking why there was a breech in the Ebola protocol from the CDC and why wasn't there more hands on by CDC employees in places where there have been an Ebola transmission, such as the hospital in Texas and if we need tighter regulation and screenings for people entering the country from hot spots in Africa I thought it was a well thought out question..... WELL.. you would have thought someone had put a lit firecracker in Earnest's boxer shorts.
The reporter was, IMO, professional and was doing what he was paid to do. Earnest jumped on him like a duck on a Junebug. He was NOT professional in the least. He was very sarcastic, condescending and interrupted the reporter's every word instead of letting him ask his question in full.
I also know it's the Press Secretary's responsibility, if not in an official capacity, to deflect any and all negative press against the President and all Gov Departments
I literally wanted to smack him. He did not behave in a manner that his position demands. He behaved like a 7th grader determined to out talk and over talk the reporter and gave his rubber stamped reply.
I feel the American people deserve better and more respectful communication. This behavior does not bode well for the administration. IF you are going to hold a press conference, you have to be prepared to address all questions, not just the ones that deliver lip service to the administration.
