Most of us in the US and the Western world live very long and blessed lives, and have a standard of living that kings and nobles would have envied even as recently as three hundred years ago.

I would disagree with that. Kings and queens rarely want for food. today 25% of Americans can't afford to eat without help. .
Also I suspect you underrate their welbeing. Lot of people are fooled by the average longevity of today. People in the past lived as long as we do, but because of high infant death, wars, somewhat lack of healthcare, lack of understanding of hygiene, their average was shorter. but their kings and queens lived much better than the average american.

Even kings didn't have air conditioning, automobiles, electricity, electronics of any sort, or indoor plumbing; medicine was primitive three hundred years ago. But they certainly did not want for food.
Augustus Caesar lived to be 70, Tiberius 79. Not many other Roman emperors lived that long. Many medieval rulers died in the 50s. Most people lived only into their 30s in those days, so the rulers were much better off than the commoners.
