There is a great divide between two major systems of belief on the biblical Flood in the days of Noah. There are those who say it is either a purely mythological event or else possibly a local or regional flood. Then there are those who accept the biblical record of the Flood as a literal record of a tremendous cataclysm involving not only a worldwide deluge, but also great tectonic upheavals and volcanic outpourings that completely changed the crust of the earth and its topography in the days of Noah.
Here are a few of the many biblical reasons for believing in the global Flood:
Jesus Christ believed the Old Testament record of the worldwide Flood. Speaking of the antediluvian population, He said: "The flood came, and took them all away" (Matthew 24:39). Evolutionary anthropologists are all convinced that people had spread over the entire earth by the time assigned to Noah in biblical chronology, so an anthropologically universal Flood would clearly have required a geographically worldwide Flood.
The apostle Peter believed in a worldwide hydraulic cataclysm. "Whereby the world [Greek, kosmos] that then was, being overflowed [Greek, katakluzo] with water, perished" (2 Peter 3:6). The world was defined in the previous verse as "the heavens . . . and the earth." Peter also said that "God…spared not the old world, but saved Noah…bringing in the flood [Greek, kataklusmos] upon the world of the ungodly" (2 Peter 2:5).
The Old Testament record of the Flood, which both Christ and Peter accepted as real history, clearly teaches a global Flood. For example, the record emphasizes that "all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven…and the mountains were covered" (Genesis 7:19-20) with the waters of the Flood.
Since "all flesh died that moved upon the earth…all that was in the dry land" (Genesis 7:21-22), Noah and his sons had to build a huge Ark to preserve animal life for the post-diluvian world, an Ark that can easily be shown to have had more than ample capacity to carry at least two of every known species of land animal (marine animals were not involved, of course). Such an Ark was absurdly unnecessary for anything but a global Flood.

I believe that there was a flood. All the major religions believe it also. My question in another thread was how wide spread was the flood? I have a hard time believing it was world wide.

It is hard to grasp. If God can make the world though, I guess it wouldn't be too far out of the ballpark to believe He could also send a worldwide flood.

One would think that there would be world wide evidence of such an event.

True, but there is a lot of activity on earth. Volcanoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, fires, tornadoes, lifting of plates, areas sinking in, could these things not have destroyed a lot of the evidence over the centuries?

Volcanoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, fires, tornadoes, lifting of plates, areas sinking in, could these things not have destroyed a lot of the evidence over the centuries? Yes there is and was a lot of physical activity on the earth. Yet there is mountains that have been around for several aeons by far predating the Biblical "flood" account. The flood account is applied allegorical in the nature of our spiritual existence and spiritual application. Everything that is on or in our earthly nature shall be no longer. Why? And the sons of God saw the daughters of man that they were good; and they took to themselves wives of all that they chose. There were Nephilim in the earth in those days; and most especially after the sons of God went in unto the daughters of man, and they bare to them; the same became mighty men, who were of old, men of renown. And Jehovah saw that the evil of man was multiplied on the earth, and that all the imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil every day. Nephilim or mighty men are those who are in love of self, something God would not have chosen for us. Because only eight people were saved indicates the beginning of a new week. A "week," which is seven days, signifies an entire period of any state or time, as of reformation, of regeneration or consummation. So one must be careful as in any hour this consummation could come upon the individual.

Whoa there! You are way out of my sphere, sorry can't follow you. To me it is this simple, in Genesis God said there was a flood, a worldwide flood, covering the entire earth. So it is so. Simply going by faith. God sent Christ to die for our sins. Christ did that. Now we have hope. Our lives do not end at physical death, they begin. What? Somewhat like a caterpillar when it goes into a cocoon, then emerges a butterfly. Only forever a butterfly, never having to deal with these bodies that were dying from sin. Probably not a good description, but best I can think of. We have hope in Christ. Before there was no hope. No future. Now we have a future. Our journey on earth is short, filled with trials and tribulations, we go on with God's help and guidance, through it is all is joy though. Joy of knowing that once we have completed this journey, we will be given what He wanted to give to Adam and Eve in the first place. The essence of it all is.... hope.

My apologies for being way out of your sphere as it was and is not my intention to take you there concerning the "flood". Hbr 11:1-3 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

I am not a Bible scholar, simply a believing Christian, I depend nearly entirely on the Bible, just the Bible, for most of my information. You apparently are into in depth studying, I can't keep up with you there. You will have to come down to my level if you want me to be able to follow it. Too much information for me. I have great respect for those who do study the Bible though. I don't guess you should have to apologize for being well learned. Since you did though, your apology is accepted. Interesting information you are sharing.

Interesting information you are sharing. We have been studying and teaching for over forty years the Holy scriptures. I do think that we are on the same "level" in the sense of our dependence upon God's Word. In it we live and move and have our being as we live from what we do understand and love. I will always consider how I address a particular topic within scripture. D.

No wonder you know so much. I have read the Bible one time. Since then I refer back to different passages and chapters. Jonah is my favorite, I loved his honesty and spirit. Not much of a studier though. I am more of a okay, I believe you, now I am going to go enjoy the beautiful world you created for us. Not a good attitude for studying the Word. Yes we are on the same level, we both love God. What we understand and love, well said. With love you have no room for hate. Nor time. God bless you.

I appreciate your honesty and feel the sincerity within your spirit. I have no particular favorite book or epistle, as I see and understand only one Author of the Bible. (John 1:1-3). I have a library full of study helps, dictionaries and such. The internet has much, much more information accessible for us to "study". Yet, I am reminded of the final group of Scriptures found in the OT book Ecclesiastes 12 (NKJV) Ecc 12:8-14 “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “All is vanity.” And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs. The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright—words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd. And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.
