I just heard that Robin Williams is dead, a possible suicide. He was suffering from depression. I hate that.

Great actor, but some really dark movies and definitely too young to die.

His death is sad enough but a suicide, We never know what others feel, he no doubt was a tortured soul.

" Gather Ye rosebuds while Ye may "
This is one of my favorite scenes from Robin Williams' film ' The Dead Poets Society '
This scene is so prophetic considering his recent death.
'Carpe Diem'

When I was in my 20s I suffered from depression. I took antidepressants and they didn't seem to help. I lost my husband and my job and ended up with nothing. I was dependant others. Depression is like a black veil that covers you to where you can't function. I thank God that I had a family that cared. Eventually I pulled out of it.
I can relate to Robin Williams and his tragic death.

Victims of depression often conceal their symptoms, internalize them until it's too late. Williams was very open about his depression and alcohol and drug addiction.
I guess this relapse was just too great to over come this time He was a genius. He will be missed.

You feel guilty even though you did nothing to cause it. Thats why there are so many suicides, people get down on themselves.

I have several friends who suffer clinical depression. One just made TWO suicide attempts within the last few months
I worry about them all. One is doing much better, but the other is walking on eggshells. Therapy seems to have no effect on him. He was in short term care twice in a local hospital, but they are over crowded and usually only keep patients two weeks max. I think he needs long term in house care, but that is an uphill battle with the insurance companies We try to keep in constant touch. Hopefully he will get better. He has many, many friends to do what they can to show their support. He needs all the prayers he can get.

People in the third world countries don't have depression because they're too busy to have it. Well That's not the case, when that happened to me I sure wasn't well off and I was very busy. My guess as to why that happened to me is I had too much on my plate. That's been well over 20 years ago, it seems like a distant nightmare.

From what I've heard Drs say, clinical depression is a lifetime struggle, since it is a chemical imbalance.
Different people are affected in different ways. Some people have situational depression, which is usually short term, others suffer from chemical imbalance no matter what the situation is. Most will have to depend on medication for a lifetime. Clinical depression does not just 'go away' on it's own. There will be highs and lows, but monitoring and continued medication helps on a daily basis
It was also just disclosed that Williams had recently been diagnosed with Parkinsons. That could have been a large contributor to his trigger.
Williams was brilliant and his mind was quick as lightning. Ultra intelligent, one had to be quick ,in turn, to catch all his jokes and references.
When I said he had a 'relapse', I was not referring to drugs or alcohol, I was referring to his bout with depression.
Williams and Craig Ferguson have a lot of parallels. Ferguson once was on the brink of suicide, and battled many years with alcohol and drugs... he too, has a brilliant comedic mind. He is also a well known author and has written books about his dark periods and the hard work he committed himself to to help overcome his multiple problems.
Ferguson and Williams were close friends. I hope Williams' death does not have a negative impact on Ferguson to the point where he, too, will relapse.

You hear a lot about depression, some is true and some not. It about did me in. It was over a year before I ventured out of the house I was basically a basket case. There was no major event that snapped me out of it, it was a series of smallers things that happened that pulled me out of it. Someone finally got me outta the house by getting me to go to a Christian service on a friday night. It was held in the basement of a teamsters union hall. The people holding the meeting were the Full Gospels Businessman's Fellowship International. They prayed for me, I felt nothing but I did go to church the fellowing sunday. After that I began to make up lost ground. Yes you can recover from depression and I give God the credit.

I'm very glad for you and that you had a good support system. So many others aren't so lucky and will battle the condition for the rest of their lives.
My neighbor has, on average, two major episodes yearly. Some lasting a few weeks, some lasting a few months.. during those periods, she looses weight, becomes a recluse and withdraws. So far she has always achieved remission, but her onset came at puberty, she is now in her late forties. Her form of depression is strictly a chemical imbalance. It will remain a problem for her for the rest of her life. Her Dr has to fine tune her medication from time to time.
On the other hand, there are millions of people with depression who have never sought medical intervention. They are 'functional depressives' they go through the routine of daily life and most others never know the agony they are living with. That is the type of depression that sometimes end in suicide, because they think that's the only way out.
