People through out the years have debated the meanings of the words in 'American Pie' Don Mclean personally has never given a full disclosure, so we are left with only speculation. The following link is someone's interpretation of the lyrics.. I agree with some, disagree with others. The line that says: " The flames climbed high into the nght To light the "sacrificial rite" This reference, to me, is related to the botched cremation of Gram Parsons by his drunken friends in Joshua Tree park California. So since Mclean has not been clear about his lyrics, it's up for grabs. Everyone is free to interpret them as they see fit www.cfa.harvard.edu/~jdevor/links/TheMeaningOfAmericanPie.htmMclean has said ,however, that only the first few verses were referring to the death of Holly, Valens and The Big Bopper, that all the rest was a commentary on the political, music and social events during the following years

Yes, Don Mclean has never revealed the meaning of the lyrics of that song. I think there are a number of things he had in mind, one was the death of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens....The day the music died. Something that fascinates me is about 7 minutes into the song...I knew a girl that sang the blues...watch closely as the tears begin to roll down his cheeks, Janis Joplin, hmmm I wonder. I think the song is his autobiography and a history lesson of his life and times.
