We have been binge watching Star Trek Voyager and found an episode where the Hologram Doctor teaches another culture about singing.
We were very impressed with his operatic ability.
His swan song was a short number about a lost love.
I discovered a love for Italian opera when I first saw the movie "La Boheme". It was a performance in the La Scala Theater.
Here is the short ballad on youtube.
Ah, a short investigation discovered that a more famous tenor did the voice over for the song. Agostino Castagnola
I like his version best of the others I've discovered.
There is a second verse to the song which was left out though.
Italian Translation in English
I I
Sotto la gronda de la torre antica Under the eaves of the old tower,
Una rondine amica, as the almond tree blossoms,
Allo sbocciare del mandorlo è tornata. a friendly swallow has returned.
Ritorna tutti gli anni, Every year she returns,
Sempre alla stessa data, always in the same day.
Monti e mare essa varca She crosses mountains and sea
per tornar. to get back here.
Solo amore Only love flees
Quando fugge e va lontano and does not return.
Speri invano It makes you hope in vain,
E non torni più, but it does not return.
Speri invano It makes you hope in vain,
E non torni più. but it does not return.
II II
Nella penombra dolce della sera In the soft twilight of evening
Passa la primavera. springtime is passing.
Cinguettano le rondini nel volo, The swallows chatter in their flight —
Ebbre di luce e d'aria. they are drunk with light and air.
Ed io son triste e solo; But I am sad and lonely.
Monti e mare tu non varchi You do not cross mountains and sea
per tornar. to come back to me.
Mia piccina, My little one,
Fosti tutta la mia vita; You were my whole life,
Sei fuggita but you ran away,
E non torni più. never to return.
Sei fuggita You ran away,
E non torni più. never to return!
