Ever been in a hospital? I have and they can range from being good to being very bad. The last time I had a stay in a hospital I was taken to St. Mary's at 6am. I laid in the E.R. all day and was taken up to a room 12 hrs later. I had nothing to eat all day. I was in a private room so the next day I decide to take a shower. No bar soap, no wash clothe, no towel. I ended up using hand soap from a dispenser on the wall and brown paper towels to wash my face. I could get no sleep there, every 20 minutes someone was in there doing something to me. A couple days later my Mom wanted to walk me to the end of the hall and back. We walked out the door and I staggered back into the wall, my Mom grabbed me and said are you Okay? With a lack of food and sleep I was weak. I wasn't weak when I went in there but they changed that. I was released the next day and I was glad to get out of there before they killed me.

In Amsterdam you can be treated for minor and medium ailments at an "Apothecary". It is like a cross between our drug store and an emergency room. It is not expensive and the employee I met was very skilled and knowledgeable. An Army buddy and I had gone to Holland for a short ten day vacation. One day we rented motorbikes and traveled to Zandvoort. I put my toe in the Atlantic (technically the English Channel). When we arrived back in Amsterdam, trolley tracks I paralleled had a gap where they didn't meet the cobblestones, and my front tire slipped into the gap and blew out. I was sliding on the cobblestones in front of my motorbike getting roughed up and trying to stop. Then I noticed a car behind me was also trying to stop, so I tried to slide some more. Of course then I immediately stopped. The car mangled the motorbike a bit. A Dutch businessman in a suit leaped into the road to help me. He paid a motorbike repair shop to repair the motorbike and he took me around the corner to an Apothecary where they cleaned me up and put medicine and bandages on me. I asked how much I owed and he refused to take any money. He told me to tell everyone in the U.S. how good the Dutch people were to me. And it is true, this incident was only one of many memorable positive encounters with Dutch people.
But I digress. We should have something like an Apothecary here, where minor and medium medical care can be paid for inexpensively.

What a wonderful story. Don't we have care like that to a small degree? I think the Kroger's here by me has a Nurse Practitioner and so does Walgreen's. They treat people for minor stuff.

I've been in several civilian hospitals and for the most part had decent service. The VA Med Center here though has saved my life twice, once with a major MI, and then with a pancreas problem. In the Audie Murphy hospital it was dirty, the doctors have little to no bedside manner, and their drug coattail made me hallucinate. They also said I had gall stones and my doc at the local VA got the report from San Antonio and said they took out a perfect good gall bladder.

Wow, I would stay away from them, that's terrible.
