Less freedom is the trend. Already many countries have more freedom than we do. When I was in Germany, the roof of our barracks was repaired by local Germans. The roof was easily more than 50 feet off the concrete courtyard. The Germans had stopped for a beer break and were sitting on the tile roof drinking their beer.

Consider this. If your children get health care for free and college education for free, do they have more freedom? Many European countries offer both of these.

They can legally do so in public housing for obvious reasons. They can't legally do so in private homes. Nor do I suspect that it would pass any constitutional check.

A lot of people don't smoke, and won't buy a house or car if it has that cigarette smell. I smoked for many years but stopped smoking in my car and trucks way back in 88. Stopped smoking in my house soon after mostly due to having an office in one of the bedrooms and clients would visit or I would have prospective clients visit to see my operation. I quit smoking soon after. The smoke smell will stay embedded for years. Insurance premiums are also less in a non-smoking house as well as medical insurance for non-smokers.

The privately owned apartment where Polly and I lived in Georgia had a ban on smoking inside the buildings. The maintenance costs are lower in a non-smoking apartment.
