Now here might be the next option for Windows software and it isn't made by Microsoft... Called ReactOS, it is a complete Windows clone that will run Windows software, with Windows drivers. Right now it is the Alpha stage but can be downloaded for testing purposes only for now since it is still in development and not all feathers are included. I have been testing it now for a couple weeks and it is awesome in what it can do right now. I loaded MS Office, Windows live mail, and several other apps from the Microsoft web site and they all worked, although they did have a few bugs which will be worked out way before it is released to the general public. The best thing here is that it is free and will continue to be free. It is open source and you can download the source code and modify it and recompile it. Like I said, this is in an Alpha stage and has a way to go before it is in Beta and general release, so if you have a spare computer that isn't doing anything or can create a Virtual Machine then give it a try. www.reactos.org/node/946

Thanks for a really encouraging post. Does Open Office work with it? I have that but have never really used it as I got bogged down in figuring it out.

I'm sure it would, I use Libre Office which is also free software and I like it better than Open Office. Fact is the head programmers at Libre Office came from the Open Office project because they did not like the direction Open Office was taking. Libre Office is really similar to MS Office but you can configure it to suit you. It is 100% compatible with all versions of MS Office including the latest version. When Office brings out a new version Libre programmers will add the same functions.

Thanks for the tip. I can't look into it right now, but maybe in the near future....

System requirements say Windows 8, but not 8.1. Think it will still work?

Yes. When you see the requirements are of a version it also will include versions higher, in this case 8 or 8.1 are both Windows 8. But anything that requires 7 or higher will run in Windows 10. Fact is that I have some old programs that require Windows 9x (95/98/ME) that run great under 10.

Thank you! Like a lot of people, I taught myself this stuff and I'm sure not any kind of engineer.

I might try that one. I use open office writer. I have learned a little about that application. I am unfamiliar with microsoft office products. When I tried using other open office applications they were difficult to learn and it was not possible for me to use them to do what I wanted to. I was trying to edit graphics and I ended up using Irfanview.

I was trying to edit graphics and I ended up using Irfanview. I use Gimp, it is very powerful. Much like Photoshop but free. When I used MS Office I used just about everything, used Excel, Access, and Power Point the most. I also tried Ability Office when it first came out. It was free back then but now charges for it. I liked it and it was easier to learn. Libre though just came out with their latest version which also incorporates many Win10 features. Just about everything I have is open source now except for MS Visio, I haven't found a free program that does what it does for me.
