I'm suppose to take a water pill every day, a while back I ran out of them so I went a couple weeks without them. I noticed I had picked up a few lbs. and my ankles were getting puffy. I went to the doctors and he gave me another prescription. So I started taking them again and in a week and a half I lost 17 lbs.

A lot of Drs will automatically put patients on Hydochlorot if they take certain blood pressure meds such as Norvasc, which is a calcium channel blocker.. I was on hydrochlorot for years, then when I had temp kidney failure the Dr took me off it and I haven't taken any in about six years, I seem to be doing OK, no fluid accumulation that I can tell

This new Doctor I have said a water pill is a blood pressure pill.

Well although it can help treat blood pressure it is classified as a diuretic. It helps eliminate excess body fluid which helps the regular blood pressure medicine, if you are taking any, work better. If you are not taking any regular blood pressure medicine, the diuretic still eliminates excess body fluid and helps the kidneys function to capacity which in turn helps reduce blood pressure.
The pharmacologic definition of Hydroclorot is a diuretic. Most regular blood pressure medicines are calcium channel blockers or beta blockers.
Hydrochlorothiazide can also be used to treat Glaucoma, so you got a bonus. It can also be used for certain heart conditions, certain complications of diabetes, to control or slow down the growth of kidney stones in people who have had them previously. There are other uses, but these are the ones that come to mind. By helping to reduce the amount of fluid in the body, it helps reduce sodium ( salt ) which is the real culprit.
