IMO Craig Ferguson was the funniest guy to ever grace a late nite TV show. However, there is no way to compare Ferguson and Letterman because their styles are so different, both rock stars in their field
I was hoping Craig would inherit Dave's slot. BUT.. a lot of Craig's format is based on adult entertainment. I don't know how it would have translated into a 'semi'clean' format. It would be like trying to hold back a race horse and tell him he can only trot. Most of his dialogue and skits were innuendo, but still of a sexual nature. Nothing really Dirty, dirty, just funny.
He didn't even really need guests, although he always had someone interesting, he could just take off into 'Craig land' all impromptu and you would have tears from laughing so hard.
The interaction between Craig and his gay skeleton robot friend Geoff ( you'd have to be familiar ) was a riot,
Ferguson has one of the sharpest minds in comedy, he is so quick with come backs, none rehearsed, He has written several books, the man is a comedy genius. I TRULY miss Craig.
I would love to catch one of his live stand up shows. I can only imagine what it would be like with relaxed censorship !
When Dave leaves the building for the last time, we will have lost an American institution as the lights of the Ed Sullivan Theater go down for the last late night show. I guess it's true. All good things must come to an end.
