Well, today when I went to the Ophthalmologist, my eyes were still severely dry.. so he cauterized the upper punctal duct in my left eye ( the worst one ) Did it hurt..? YES, it hurt like a b$%#@, compare it to a hot poker to the eye. This article says they inject a numbing agent..but my Dr said he wasn't going to use one because my eyes were already inflamed and the numbing agent has been known to make the inflammation worse.. OK , so I held on and endured it..Actually, it only took a second, and that eye already feels somewhat better with the retained tears. He said it was OK with him if I cussed, so " Bring it on, I've heard it all " says he with a smile, or it may have been a smirk ::)I'll probably have the other eye done next month.. So let's have a big 'Yea' for modern Ophthalmology www.willseye.org/health-library/punctal-cauteryPunctal Cautery "Punctal cautery is burning the tear duct opening so it scars closed. This procedure is typically performed in patients with severe dry eyes when punctal plugs aren’t working, most commonly because they keep falling out. Punctal cautery is performed in the office. A local anesthetic in injected into the area to be cauterized. Once it is numb, a small tip cautery is placed in the tear duct opening and it is burned closed. While it stays closed the majority of the time, it occasionally opens up, at which point it may need to be cauterized again. "

I have dry eyes also. I have a bottle of eye drops in every room it seems. They feel like I have sand in my eyes. I have good vision insurance and about a month ago I went and had my eyes tested so I could get new glasses. The doctor told me I have cataracts on both eyes and the one on my right eyes is bubbled, I guess that's not good. He tried to talk me into having surgery but I said nah, not right now. I'll have something done when I can tell I have a problem, right now I can't tell there's anything wrong.

I'll have something done when I can tell I have a problem, right now I can't tell there's anything wrong. I had cataract surgery two years ago. After that my vision was perfect... then all this other stuff started. I've known for years that I've had Sjogrens, but it had never really been a problem until right after mt cataract surgery ( which had NOTHING TO DO WITH IT ), just timing coincidence.
The Sjogrens is an autoimmune disorder connected to my Rheumatoid Arthritis.
I feel as though I've spent more time at the Ophthalmologist's office than home. I go every two weeks. I've had plugs inserted into all the punctate ducts. The ones in my right eye stay in place, the ones in my left eye won't cooperate. They keep falling out.
Two weeks ago, I had the upper duct on the left eye cauterized. He is going to cauterize the lower one next week. Right now I am wearing contact bandages in both eyes and they are driving me nuts. They slide all over and it feels like I have a foreign body in my eye. Ha, well I do, but you know what I mean, like an eyelash or something. The good news is that the autologous drops ( blood serum ) are slowly beginning to work to heal my scratched corneas..Praise the Lord. One day at a time.. that's all you can do. Go ahead and get that cataract surgery done. It's a snap. They have it down to a fine science these days.

Yeah my mom had both eyes done, one eye at a time of course. She also said there's nothing to it.

Yeah my mom had both eyes done, one eye at a time of course. She also said there's nothing to it. Once I was sedated, it took ten minutes tops. And with Propophol (sp ) you are awake instantly with no hangover or groggy after effects. If you have dry eyes, get the single use vials of eye drops the ones that are preservative free. Sometimes it's the preservatives that make the dryness and redness worse. I just get the box of 70, the Walmart generic brand. They contain the exact same ingredients as the higher name brands and work just as well. I use Restasis too, but can't tell that it helps much.

I continue to have vision problems. With new glasses I can't see the small stuff like I once could. Driving at night is a big problem. I'll probably have something done by the end of the summer.

Do get that cataract surgery done, sydney, ASAP. It's an easy surgery.
People do seem to often develop other problems after cataract surgery, based on what I have read, but you need to take care of the cataracts. Getting old is a bitch, isn't it? It's something we all have to deal with, like it or not.
They keep testing me for glaucoma after my surgery, but they've finally decided I may be OK, and just have abnormally high eye pressure and a an unusually thick cornea.
skylar, you have my sympathy. Going to the Ophthalmologist's office that often is very annoying, I'm sure. I dislike going to doctor's offices, and try to avoid going to them as much as possible.

Drs offices seem to be my second home. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 1986. Since then I have, religiously ,had a blood draw every six weeks. The high octane drugs for RA have a tendency for kidney and liver damage. My Dr is very conscious about the chances. So, in order to have my prescriptions renewed so I can have a semi normal life, I must go with her demand for bloodwork every six weeks on the dot. No deviation, no procrastination. I also have glaucoma and have a drainage implant. It seems to be well controlled. Wish I could say the same for the damaged cornea thing.. But.. we all have our cross to bear.. I realize how very lucky and blessed I am in all other areas.. One day at a time..All one has to do is look around you. You will always see people who have problems much more severe. I pray for them.
