I came into the posession of a abnormal psychology book once and it was written in the 1950s. In it it described homosexual conduct as a mental illiness. I was just thinking how things and beliefs have changed in fifty years.

In the 50s lobotomies were still being used to 'cure' certain mental and emotional problems. An invasive, barbaric operation which often left patients in a vegetative state or dead. So yes, thank goodness things in psychology have 'changed'

Back then, most children had their appendix removed, and many had their tonsils removed, or their adenoids. It's amazing how much medicine has changed since then. There were tenant farmers and there was Segregation. Everyone was afraid of something getting on their 'permanent record'...I guess NSA now keeps our 'permanent record' Freud was still the guru of psychology. The mentally disturbed were kept in places called 'insane asylums'. Can we all go there? The amount of changes in our culture since then truly is amazing.

If necessary, of course they did, but not if there was no medical need. I still have both intact. My Granddaughter had her's removed a few months back

I am from the era you refer to and as I said, still have both my appendix and tonsils, as do all my friends and family members of the same age. I never knew it to be done unless medically necessary.

Then all I can is that the medical practices where you lived were different from the medical practices where I lived.

I've also heard some say that routine vaccinations were given in school..that was not the case where I lived either. Parents were resonsible for their children's routine vaccinations and shots. There was a public health office where the vaccinations could be had free of charge for those who couldn't afford a private Dr, however it was not done in school

I would estimate that 5-10% of the children in the area where I lived had their adenoids removed, maybe 40-50 % had their tonsils removed, and maybe 25-33 % had their appendix removed. That seems far out of line with what the stats today would be.
Mom used to say that the local hospitals there used to give everyone who came into the waiting room a shot of penicillin, no matter what they had come in for, based on the idea 'it won't hurt them'. Most of the local doctors smoked, too.
No, none of mine were removed.

People used to purposely expose their kids to childhood diseases such as measles, chickenpox, mumps etc, never realizing that some could be life threatening. That sounds insane now. But now most of those diseases have preventative vaccinations or injections to prevent them. I remember my mother telling me how ether was used as an anesthesia for surgery and sometimes burned the flesh around the mouth, eyes and nose from the chemical effects. It's also amazing that penicillin was synthesized as an antibiotic after I was born ( OK, I'm really telling my age now ). "Chemist John C. Sheehan at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) completed the first chemical synthesis of penicillin in 1957. I was shocked ( no pun intended ) to learn that shock therapy is still being used. Although the process has definitely improved concerning comfort during the administration for the patient. The patient is now completely under short term anesthesia during the proceedure. . We are so blessed with the advancement of modern medicine.

Actually no adult has their adenoids or in rare cases they might have kept them, in the teen years they start shrinking and by adulthood they are totally gone. Tonsils are normally removed after episodes of tonsillitis, difficulty breathing or swallowing, sleep apnea, or any growths on the tonsils.

I came into the possession of a abnormal psychology book once and it was written in the 1950s. In it it described homosexual conduct as a mental illness. I was just thinking how things and beliefs have changed in fifty years. It is amazing to me how the natural minded person likes to write articles about mankind that they have no spiritual understanding about. Their research is bias and limited to only the studies they chose to study, that is like having one pair and shoes in one box and telling everyone that this size shoe is the only way and the only pair or path we can wear to receive comfort, knowledge, and understanding of the world we live in and that it is the only way to receive Heaven or to feel good about oneself. I would like to read articles from people who are homosexual and try to understand how they feel about themselves and why and how they have come to the conclusion to live their lives in a manner and a way in which is different from my belief system. Their are many paths in this life time that can lead us to learn the art of loving ourselves and loving other people and I would like to learn and understand other peoples information and life story about how we grow and evolve as a community. The " Word of God'" teaches me about tolerance, patience, forgiveness, love and kindness and I am glad now that the new psychology books are seeing this as a different lifestyle and not a mental illness. The natural mind calls a lot of things mental illness just because they do not understand what is going on with the person. I am glad to see, that the medical profession now of days does she that people who have different sexual preferences are okay, in that maybe people will understand that it is okay to love another human being who does things different than we do and that, that is okay. Love is always the key to Freedom within our inner spirit.

It is my opinion that homosexuals are born homosexuals. It's only during puberty or sometimes earlier that they realize they are somehow 'different' than straight people.
Many people have taken their lives in the struggle to be understood and accepted, especially by family. I can't imagine a family, a mother or father and siblings turning their backs on their own children because they are gay. My mind cannot wrap around that. That must be the most lonely, alienated feeling a person can endure. There is no condition, situation, circumstance imaginable that would cause me to turn my back on my children.
I don't know why any is born with certain personalities, character traits or sexual preferences that develop over time, and I don't think it's right to judge.
I struggle to understand why the Bible refers to homosexuality as a 'sin' but God created each of us, some straight and some homosexual. I don't think it's A 'choice' by any stretch of the imagination.
I have some gay friends who are, by far, kinder and more in tune to the feelings of others than most of my straight friends. Maybe it's because they've endured so much harassment and non acceptance from society as a whole, that they are just simply more accepting of all people.

I think homosexuality can be a sin and can also not be a sin. I differ a little from your view. I believe some gay people are born that way, they cannot help being what they are. I also think there are other gays that for what ever reason simply prefer to be with a person of the same sex.

I think homosexuality can be a sin and can also not be a sin. I differ a little from your view. I believe some gay people are born that way, they cannot help being what they are. I also think there are other gays that for what ever reason simply prefer to be with a person of the same sex. So, in your opinion, the people who simply choose to be with a person of the same sex, would be just as happy in a heterosexual relationship ? Wouldn't they be defined as bi-sexual rather than a heterosexual gone astray ? You spoke earlier of the 'old contract' ( Old Testament) and the new contract ( New Testament) . I'm obviously not the Bible scholar that you are, never pretended to be. So maybe you can answer this. Is homosexuality referred to as a sin in the new contract.. New Testament? If it is not mentioned in the New Testament, then would you consider it non applicable in today's world , such as the reference to. " An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth .?
That's where the lines blur for me. Things, laws, referred to in the Old Testament, are no longer applicable after the birth of Jesus, or The New Testament, the new contract ? Is that what you are saying...however, the Ten Commandments, the laws by which most of us aspire to follow were given to Moses in the Old Testament. How are we to go about decoding which declarations are still applicable and which aren't? Obviously we no longer offer animal sacrifices.. I'd have a hard time with that one, and besides we'd have PETA filling law suits Just want your input. And one more thing. Homosexuality was condemned as a sin ( in the Old Testament) but incest was mentioned and not necessarily condemned as a sin. OR, maybe I didn't read further to know how God judged Lot Lot's behavior. Genesis `13:91 'Our father is getting old, and there are no men in the whole world to marry us so that we can have children. 32 Come on, let’s get our father drunk, so that we can sleep with him and have children by him.' (Genesis 19:31 - 32). www.biblestudy.org/question/lot-and-his-daughters.htmlThe daughters proceed to get their father drunk with wine then have sex with him. They do such a good job at getting their father inebriated that the Bible says he did not know what was happening or what he was doing (verses 33, 35). The two women become pregnant and eventually give birth to boys named Moab (father of the Moabites tribe) and Benammi (father of the Ammonites). So do you think God accepted Lot's drunken state to forgive him of incest with his own daughters ? Or was homosexuality a sin, but incest.. not so much ? Just curious Sorry, I got carried away. Maybe this should be moved to one of the spiritual or Christian boards. I'll leave that to admin.
