Facebook has listed large sections of land in the Amazon Rainforest for sale, including land reserved for indigenous peoples and land in National Foressts. A BBC investigation forced Facebook to vow to prevent those sales.
"In order to prove the ads were real, the BBC arranged meetings between four sellers and an undercover operative posing as a lawyer claiming to represent wealthy investors."
' One land-grabber, Alvim Souza Alves, was trying to sell a plot inside the Uru Eu Wau Wau indigenous reserve for about £16,400 in local currency.
In response to the BBC's investigation, Brazil's Supreme Federal Court ordered an inquiry into the sale of protected areas of the Amazon via Facebook.
Despite calls from indigenous leaders to do more, at the time Facebook said it was "ready to work with local authorities", but would not take independent action to halt the trade.
Now the company says it has consulted the UN Environment Programme (Unep) and other organisations to take its "first steps" in trying to address the issue.
"We will now review listings on Facebook Marketplace against an international organisation's authoritative database of protected areas to identify listings that may violate this new policy," the Californian tech firm clarified. '
'The social media giant changed its policy following a BBC investigation into the practice.
The new measures will apply only to conservation areas and not to publicly owned forest.
And the move will be limited to the Amazon, not other rainforests and wildlife habitats across the world.'
Jeff Bezoa would sell his family and friends for enough money. He would sell his right leg if you offered enough money.

I don't think I've ever looked at Facebook Market Place. It's not something I would think to do. Do a lot of people use it? Can you list things by location like Craig's List does?

I don't know anything about it. I quit Facebook when they gave me a 3 day suspension for making an anti-war comment. That was years ago. My family were all upset. It was a way for the extended family to stay in touch.
I think that in Brazil, Facebook Market Place is more important. In Brazil it probably displays in Portuguese and ads placed there may not even be viewable in the U.S. Maybe Mark Zuckerburg has a monster of a company that is beyond his ability to control. Maybe he doesn't even care, until important people scream at him. He certainly didn't care when I quit Facebook. To him, I am less important than a piss ant on his driveway.
I objected to the suspension and promised to quit if it wasn't lifted. Then I notified all my contacts why I was quitting. I think everyone should quit Facebook. The company has no heart, it has no morality, unless it gets caught and like I said, important people, who can punish Facebook, scream at Zuckerburg.
I prefer email for communicating now.

I assume you mean Mark Zuckerberg. Bezos is the guy who owns Amazon. Either way, I have a Facebook account but I rarely post anything. I do look at it sometimes to see what people I know are up to. It just never occurred to me it was a place to buy and sell stuff.

Yes, thank you, I have to apologize for my mistreatment of Bezos, and now I have to attach the high school yearbook picture of Zuckerburg to Facebook. When companies get too big too quickly they sometimes go off the rails. I expect that Facebook in Brazil operates almost independently of the U.S. Facebook. It probably takes on the prejudices and foibles of whatever country it finds itself in. Brazil (with the exception of the indigenous people) resents our warning them about the danger of cutting the Amazon. They point out the reality of the logging of more than 99% of our forests. (There are only a few small swaths of old growth forest left). We also weren't that tolerant about the native people either.
So it is that we continue to progress to the underwater theme park that will be Florida.
