The guy playing the guitar riff in this Animal's cover of an 1930s American folk song, Hilton Valentine, passed away Friday at the age of 77. It's one of those songs everyone my age recalls from their youth. Country music singer Roy Acuff actually recorded an early version of this song, believe it or not. But the Animal's version is the one everyone recognizes and remembers.

I remember wanting one of those Vox organs. They had the ability to make that high shrill sound that would stand out from the guitars. Even today it is tough to find an emulation of them that is convincingly authentic. I noticed that whatever the keyboardist was sitting on has been edited out. Of course the keyboardist is faking the playing of it. They didn't have substitutes for power cords and speaker cords back then. 77 is kind of young, but rock and roll musicians never planned on living that long. The song itself was originally written for a woman to sing: "and it's been the ruin of many a poor girl".
Joan Baez did a more authentic version of the original song.

This is one of my favorites by the Animals. It looks like it was put together at the same time as the other video.

This is another Animals tune that had that magic for me.

I need to get out my vinyl stuff. I think I still have the 1966 "Best of" album. It had all three of these and several others I liked. "It's my life" and "We gotta get out of this place" were good ones.

Okay, it's trivia time. Who is the guy hosting Hullabaloo in the "It's my life" video? He's still alive and in his 90s.
