When I was in seventh grade our Grandparents visited our home. They purchased a basic piano, E-flat Alto Sax and a Slingerland Concert Snare drum. My younger siblings chose the piano and sax. I chose the drum and began lessons and eventually into the school band. My youngest sister who had chosen the sax took lessons and eventually be came first chair as a freshman in High School. The other sister and younger brother took piano lessons. The brother quit not liking the practice it takes, the sister went on to eventually to be quite good and played the organ at a Lutheran Church.
I did not like to practice the drums, percussion much. However, I learned well enough to continue through grade school and into high school bands. After High School I spent one year playing in a rock band, we did not go to far and I had to join the army. During that time I purchased a hand made guitar (Vietnamese made) for $5.00. It was not the best yet I learned a number of chords. The cheap guitar did not last long, I eventually purchased a Harmony Classical and used that through some folk guitar lessons at the local Junior College. Which then prompted my purchase of an instrument, an Ovation Steel Acoustic. This year I purchased a Fender Strat with Amp, it is at the shop getting new strings and changing the action.
I have also purchased several hand made indigenous Indian flutes and a penny whistle. I am in the process of learning them.
With all of this I will confess that I am not a great player of the instruments. I dabble on the piano, flutes and guitars. I no longer have drums, yet I hammer out beats on anything handy. But, I enjoy every minute of my dabbling.
