There is nothing worse I hate than having to take my car to a mechanic. I already know he is going to "humor" me, by looking into the problem that he just knows for sure does not exit. It is so irritating. If my car is making a clunking noise then I am capable of hearing a clunking noise. Awww no it wasn't a clunking noise, it was just the brakes or some other nonsense. What is with mechanics and women?

What is with mechanics and women? Stand your ground and speak up. After taking my car to the dealership four times ,for what I initially knew was a transmission problem, I encountered the same. I told them my car wasn't shifting right.... uhhh. OK. They replaced both catalytic converters, ( what new car with less than `15,000 miles needs new catalytic converters, unless it's a recall, mine was not ) an oil sending device, and some computer related thingamajig. The car was still doing the same thing. My husband was out of town on business,, otherwise I would have handed it over to him..The car was still under warranty , so I figured they were soaking the product for all they could get out of it. I finally pitched a hissy fit, ( drew quite a large crowd and used some rather unlady like language ) ) threatened to call consumer affairs and demanded to speak to the owner of the dealership.. he, naturally ( so said the parts dept ) was 'out of town' After a call from my atty, it was amazing how quickly they diagnosed and fixed the problem.. A bad transmission sensor ! Dealerships are often the worst of the lot.

That is ridiculous isn't it. I had to take my car back several times, and finally he fixed it. With an attitude but he did it. Now I try to find a guy to take it, just a lot easier.

It should never come down to a gender problem. I think that's what made me so mad over my incident. I've been driving for close to 50 years now. I may not be technically correct 100% of the time, but dagnab it, I know when a car isn't shifting right. That's a no brainer.. and for sure don't address me as 'Little lady'.. I may be little and I try to be a lady but I will make exceptions ! It's not professional, it's condescending and I won't put up with it. I guess they think all women are dumb as rocks when it comes to cars... their mistake. I did get a free tire rotation, oil change and car detail out of the ordeal... big whoop .

Good for you that is more than I got. Have you ever watched the fruitcake lady videos? She is hilarious. As for being a lady, I am as long as they act like a gentleman. Works both ways.

That is about normal, dealers money cow is warranty work, you don't pay for it but the manufacturer does and that is just one reason that vehicles cost so much now. As far as mechanics and women, get at least two estimates on the car and tell the mechanic that is what you are going to do. You might pay a small fee for them to diagnose the problem but the mechanic that does fix it won't charge that fee or will deducted it from the final price. Call the BBB and get some feedback before you go and get the shops that have the fewest complaints.

You would think that would work with a mechanic, it only works if you are a man. I asked the mechanic to repair my car, whatever it cost, it had sentimental value, money was not an object I had a small savings set up for my car, he coped an attitude with me the minute he seen I was a woman. He actually had an opportunity to make a substantial amount of money. It had 0 compression, lol. That was just one incidence. I have had several unpleasant encounters with mechanics. Men have no idea how men who do not like women treat their women when they are not around. You would be surprised. Maybe I should of wore short shorts.

That is sad that some people, doesn't matter if it was a man or a woman, to act like that.

One guy told me he would do the repairs if I made him a batch of brownies. At first I thought he was joking. He asked me if I knew how to make brownies, I told him yes, then he said he would do the repairs and give me a discount if I would bake him a batch of cocoa brownies. So went home, baked them, took them back and he did just as he said. You never know what to expect.

My secular employment is as a Road Service Technician for a major Forklift company, 38 years. I feel for the women who have to struggle with gender biased brain dead mechanics. There are some of us who care about our customers regardless of gender. When you find that one tech that cares, keep him or her and tell others. I have three daughters of whom own cars. I have a technician I went to school with years ago. I told him that I would be sending my girls to his shop for what they need done. I also told him that what ever he told them I would be hearing about before they agree to any repairs. He has not let them down and has even called me to tell me what needed to be done.
Shop around, call around and ask to talk to other customers.

I have long since found a great and accomplished mechanic who seems to be fair and honest. They must be a rare breed.

And working in the trade, albeit Forklifts, there are some peers of whom I would not have working on any of my equipment. I do not like "come backs:, or "rework". Last year I had one. None so far, knock on wood and thank God.

I don't think it is who you take it to, but who is reliable and honest. You can find them nowadays. For example, I found a good man to fix my windows that won't roll up or down from time to time. He retired from an auto place that put in security systems and other things in cars. He does repair work at his house for cheap. I was amazed at how little he charged me. Then I learned last year he passed away when I needed my window repaired again and had no choice but took it to Pep Boys who charged me over $200. I ranted over how someone I knew did it for $65.
