You think it is a fresh copy of windows 10 or just a add on for 8.1?

It is the complete windows 10. I haven't been scheduled for it yet. I worry a little about compatibility with my programs, I thought about removing the start menu I use to make 8.1 behave like Windows 7. That might not be compatible with Windows 10. I think the features you don't find on Windows 10 an probably be accomplished in some way, that is not obvious yet. The time you set for your screen saver probably is accomplished in some other menu, like a general settings menu. You can question the Microsoft Windows support team, with this and your difficulties with the touch screen. I don't have a monitor with a touch screen yet. I expect the price to come down within the next year. It would be handy with my music scores while performing with the band.

Well I have downloaded and installed Windows 10. I uninstalled the shell program I used with 8.1 and so far so good. I think that the main reason that Microsoft didn't charge for the upgrade was because there isn't a whole lot of difference between 8.1 and 10. Also, they probably wanted to mend fences after the unpopular way that 8 and 8.1 changed the way people interacted with their computer.

I didn't see anything wrong with windows XP. They changed it and the more they changed it the worse it got.

Well there is one thing that makes 8.1 and 10 more valuable to me. I like to use my computer to stream live TV. I live too far away from Seattle, to pick up the Seattle stations and the only local TV we have does not feature local news or broadcasting by any of the networks. So I can watch news and all the CBS shows by streaming them to my TV over HDMI. Then when I want to use the computer as a computer, I can switch monitors back to the computer monitor. It switches the audio too. This might have been possible with XP. I tried to make it work. I bought a computer fast enough and a video card with HDMI out. Then I installed XP. The video card would not use the HDMI output with XP. It turned out that the video card manufacturer had no suitable driver for XP. So when Microsoft said they were no longer providing support for XP, they had already stopped helping other companies develop drivers for XP, forcing consumers with new hardware to upgrade to 7 or 8.1. Now 10 has Cortana, a talking software assistant. I haven't tried using it yet. You can see where Microsoft is heading. They don't want the consumer to tweak or modify the settings. Their plan is to have the computer controlling the consumer rather than the consumer controlling the computer. Maybe it is because they focus on the complaints they hear from people who try to change things and bungle them up.

Orogenicman reports that he was very dissatisfied with his windows 10 upgrade. He tried to revert to Windows 7 and it told him that the files were not available, even though he could see the files in his computer. So he formatted and reinstalled windows 7. He reports that edge and cortana demand a lot of personal information to get them to work. He says that after supplying the information he was deluged with phone calls from companies trying to market products to him.
I told him thanks for the info. I haven't tried cortana or edge yet, and now I will steer clear of them.

When you click on the icon in the lower left corner, the power button let's you shut down and reboot. The settings let you customize it a bit. File explorer lets you use documents, videos, songs, and downloads. It is also found as a yellow folder icon at the middle bottom of your screen.
Internet explorer has become edge. I use mozilla firefox. Orogenicman says edge demands too much private information and shares it with businesses that you don't want calling you.

I had the same thing happen to me too, when I tried to revert back to 8.1 and try to reinstall 10 it told me those files were not available. I did a total reset which brought 8.1 back and then reinstalled 10 and it works great now. I don't use Cortana and I don't like how Edge works. Oh, by the way tell Oro he should come here and see how he will like it. It appears Mishka has left.

Fortunately, windows 10 downloaded properly. I updated 7, cleared the registries and run all updates and scans through Norton 360 and Malwarebytes. My better half loves windows 10, HP quad core, 8 gig ram and 2 terabyte hard drive.

Just for information though be sure to go to settings, then click on privacy and updates and turn on real time protection if it is turned off. then go back and click on Privacy and turn off everything that deals with advertising.

Thanks for the advice about the privacy settings matador. I was able to turn off about 80% of what was enabled.
